Our Story

A Decade In One Industry

In 2015, a licensed cannabis operator looking for an accountant had a short list and a lot of closed doors. National firms declined the work. Local CPAs didn't know 280E, or knew enough to be nervous. Operators were running real businesses — payroll, leases, inventory, state audits — with financial advice built for someone else's industry.

Harry Shurek founded MCA Accounting Solutions to serve those operators specifically. Not as a side practice or a new vertical, but as the whole business.

That decision has compounded. Every year since has been spent on the same set of problems: what §471 permits a cultivator to capitalize, how a vertically integrated operator should structure inter-company transactions, what a state examiner looks for in a seed-to-sale reconciliation, and how to document a cost allocation so it survives a challenge three years later.

Today we've worked with over 100 licensed operators across more than 30 states — dispensaries, cultivators, extractors, processors, ancillary providers, and vertically integrated groups. We've watched markets open, mature, saturate, and consolidate. We've defended positions under examination. We've helped operators buy, sell, and wind down.

Why Specialization Matters Here
More Than Anywhere

Cannabis accounting is not general accounting with a different client list. A generalist can produce a technically correct set of books that leaves an operator paying tax on income they never earned — because the entire game is in the allocation between deductible cost of goods sold and non-deductible operating expense, and that distinction barely matters in any other industry.

Depth is the whole product. We are one of the oldest cannabis-focused practices in the industry, and we have never done anything else.

What We Believe

Four Principles

Precision over optimism

We'll tell you what a position is worth and what it risks. Aggressive treatment that collapses under examination isn't a strategy — it's a deferred bill with interest.

Documentation is the deliverable

A good allocation you can't defend is worth nothing. Everything we build is meant to be read by an examiner someday.

We show up

We visit facilities. We walk cultivation sites and dispensary floors. Understanding how product actually moves is how you build a cost structure that holds.

Plain language

You should understand your own tax position well enough to explain it. If our advice only makes sense to another accountant, we've failed.

Leadership

Harry Shurek — Founder

Harry founded MCA Accounting Solutions in 2015, when serving cannabis businesses was a decision most accountants declined to make. He has spent the decade since working almost exclusively on the problems this industry creates: 280E exposure, cost of goods sold allocation, multi-state compliance, and the financial documentation that state licensing boards and the IRS actually accept.

He has worked with more than 100 licensed operators across 30+ states — from single-location dispensaries to vertically integrated multi-state groups — and remains directly involved in client work rather than managing from a distance.
