Coronavirus Business Advice (May 2020)
A note from 2026
Written while dispensaries were being declared essential businesses and supply chains were in chaos, this post collected the operating advice we were giving clients weekly. It is preserved at its original address; the surprising part, reading it back, is how little of it was really about the pandemic.
What we said then
Guard cash above all — extend runway, delay non-essential spending, and know your weekly burn to the dollar. Stay current on filings even if you cannot pay in full, because compliance standing preserves options. Communicate early with landlords, lenders, and vendors rather than going quiet. And document everything, because disrupted periods get examined later.
What it turned out to be
A checklist for operating through any squeeze. Cannabis has since lived through price collapses, banking losses, and regulatory whiplash, and the same four moves — cash discipline, filing discipline, early communication, documentation — have carried operators through each one. Crisis advice that survives the crisis was just good advice all along.
