Why This Differs In Cannabis
Direct production labor can generally be capitalized into inventory. Retail and administrative labor generally cannot. Employees who split time between functions require a documented, contemporaneous allocation โ and if it is not recorded when the hours are worked, it has to be estimated later, which is a materially weaker position under examination.
Most payroll providers have no mechanism for this, and many will not serve cannabis clients at all. Both problems are solvable.
If the allocation is not recorded when the hours are worked, it has to be estimated later.
